2026 Data Center Trends: The Era of Artificial Intelligence and Sustainability
In January 2026 we were at the Data Centre World conference in Dubai. The most talked-about topic: "Are data centers ready for the age of artificial intelligence?" The answer: most are not. AI models such as ChatGPT consume 10 times the energy of traditional data centers. In 2026 the industry is going through two major transformations: AI infrastructure and sustainability. In this article we cover the trends shaping the data center industry and how they are reflected in Turkey.
Trend 1: AI-Ready Infrastructure
2024 saw the artificial intelligence boom. Models such as ChatGPT, Midjourney and Claude reached millions of users. But the infrastructure needed to run these models is something else entirely:
- GPU Servers: High-performance GPUs such as the NVIDIA H100 and A100
- High Power: A GPU rack consumes 5-8 times the energy of a normal server
- The Cooling Problem: GPUs generate 300-700W of heat; traditional cooling is not enough
- High Bandwidth: 100 Gbps+ networking is needed for model training
AI Readiness at SistemDC:
By the end of 2024 we had seen a 340% increase in demand for GPU servers. Servers equipped with NVIDIA RTX 4090 and A4000 cards are used for small to mid-scale AI projects.
Our 2026 plan: building an NVIDIA H100-based AI cluster. We aim to offer GPU compute at accessible prices in Turkey.
AI Infrastructure Costs
| GPU Model |
Hardware Cost |
Power Consumption |
Monthly Operation |
| NVIDIA RTX 4090 |
$1,600 |
450W |
$180 |
| NVIDIA A100 (40GB) |
$10,000 |
400W |
$850 |
| NVIDIA H100 (80GB) |
$30,000 |
700W |
$2,400 |
Trend 2: Liquid Cooling
When GPUs generate 300-700W of heat, traditional air cooling falls short. The solution: liquid cooling.
Two Types of Liquid Cooling:
1. Direct-to-Chip Cooling:
- The coolant is delivered directly onto the CPU/GPU
- 40-60% more efficient
- Can be retrofitted to existing racks
2. Immersion Cooling:
- The server is fully immersed in a dielectric fluid
- 95%+ heat transfer
- PUE drops as low as 1.03
- High initial investment ($500K+)
Industry Forecast: According to Gartner, 30% of new data centers will use liquid cooling in 2027. Microsoft and Google are already testing immersion cooling.
Trend 3: Sustainability and Green Energy
Data centers use 2% of the world's electricity consumption. The EU's 2030 goal: carbon-neutral data centers.
Green Data Center Strategies:
- Renewable Energy: Solar panel and wind turbine integration
- PUE Improvement: A target of lowering Power Usage Effectiveness from 1.5 to 1.2
- Waste Heat Recovery: Heating buildings with server heat
- Free Cooling: Natural cooling with cold air (Finland and Iceland are popular)
SistemDC Sustainability:
Sustainability figures (the facility's PUE, free cooling ratio) are not published without documentation. In the industry, PUE and free cooling are disclosed based on the operator's own measurements.
Trend 4: Edge Computing and Micro Data Centers
As 5G and IoT spread, processing data close to its source (edge computing) is gaining importance.
What Is an Edge Data Center?
- A small-scale data center (2-10 racks)
- Geographically close to the user
- Low latency (under 5-10ms)
- Critical for autonomous vehicles and smart cities
Use Cases:
- Autonomous vehicle data (milliseconds matter)
- Smart factories (Industry 4.0)
- Telecommunications 5G core
- Gaming (cloud gaming latency is critical)
Trend 5: Modular Data Centers
Building a traditional data center takes 18-36 months. Modular data centers: 3-6 months.
Advantages:
- Fast Deployment: Built in a factory and assembled on site
- Scalability: Add modules as demand grows
- Low Initial Investment: 40-50% lower CAPEX
- Portable: Can be moved to another location if necessary
Example: Meta (Facebook) uses a modular design at its Prineville data center. They can increase capacity 30% faster.
Trend 6: Quantum-Ready Infrastructure
Quantum computers are not yet widespread, but in 2026 IBM, Google and Microsoft offer quantum cloud services. Data centers need to be prepared:
- Post-Quantum Cryptography: Current encryption is vulnerable to quantum attacks
- Cryogenic Cooling: Quantum computers operate at -273°C
- Dedicated Network: Fiber infrastructure for quantum entanglement
The Data Center Industry in Turkey
Turkey is strategically located between Europe and the Middle East. In 2024-2026 the industry has seen a great deal of activity:
Recent Developments:
- Data Residency Law: Storing personal data in Turkey is mandatory (2024)
- Foreign Investment: Giants such as Equinix and Digital Realty are entering Turkey
- 5G Infrastructure: Turkcell and Vodafone rolling out 5G (driving the need for edge DCs)
- Energy Prices: High electricity costs make PUE improvement essential
Turkey Data Center Capacity (2026 Estimate)
- Istanbul: ~60 MW (market estimate)
- Izmir: ~8 MW (market estimate)
- 2026 Growth: 28% (European average 12%)
2026 Forecasts
Certain to Happen:
- Demand for GPU servers will grow by 200%+
- Liquid cooling will become widespread
- PUE below 1.3 will become standard
- The number of edge data centers will triple
Likely to Happen:
- The number of Tier 4 data centers will grow (Turkey's first Tier 4 may open)
- Quantum computing pilot projects will begin
- Blockchain node hosting will become widespread
- A carbon tax on data centers will come onto the agenda

Conclusion: Time to Adapt
The data center industry is going through a major transformation in 2026. Artificial intelligence, sustainability and edge computing are no longer "nice-to-have" but "must-have".
At SistemDC we have followed the industry closely for 14 years. What we have seen since 2012: those who adapt quickly win. Those who moved to the cloud late lost out, and those who missed the mobile transformation shrank.
The winners in 2026 will be those who build AI-ready infrastructure, take sustainability seriously and invest early in edge computing.
Note: The trends in this article are based on information compiled from Gartner, IDC and Uptime Institute 2024-2026 reports and the Data Centre World Dubai 2026 conference. Forecasts may change.
