Every administrator meets this moment sooner or later: a firewall rule is saved, the SSH session drops and the server cannot be reached again. Or the server fails to boot after a kernel update, the disk fills up, a config file breaks or a password is forgotten. With a physical server, that meant a trip to the data centre. On a Germany VDS, two tools in the client panel, the VNC console and rescue mode, solve almost all of these problems within minutes. This guide explains when and how to use each, through six common failure scenarios.
| Tool | What it does | When to use it |
|---|---|---|
| HTML5 VNC console | Shows the running OS screen in your browser, as if you were sitting at the server | The OS boots but SSH or RDP is unreachable |
| Rescue mode | Boots a temporary Debian-based environment with outside access to the main disk | The OS will not boot, the disk needs repair, or the console cannot help |
| Password reset | Changes the root or Administrator password from the panel | The password is lost or may be compromised |
| Power control | Reboot and force off | The server is completely frozen |
| Reinstall | Rebuilds the server from a template and wipes the disk | Recovery is impossible and a current backup exists |
The rule: start with the least invasive tool. Do not jump to rescue mode if the console is enough, or to reinstalling if rescue mode is enough.
Open the console from your server's page in the client panel. It runs independently of networking, so it works even when the firewall or IP settings are broken. A few tips:
When you enable rescue mode in the client panel, the server reboots into a temporary Debian-based environment. You connect with the rescue root password you set, over SSH or the VNC console. Your main disk is untouched and appears as a second disk you can mount.
lsblk -f
mkdir -p /mnt/root
mount /dev/vda1 /mnt/root
ls /mnt/root/etc
Device names vary, so identify the right partition from the file system type and size. When finished, unmount and exit rescue mode from the panel; the server reboots into your normal OS.

If you cannot log in through the console, boot rescue mode, mount the disk and disable the firewall:
mount /dev/vda1 /mnt/root
sed -i 's/^ENABLED=yes/ENABLED=no/' /mnt/root/etc/ufw/ufw.conf
umount /mnt/root
Next time, set a timer that rolls firewall changes back automatically after a few minutes when working remotely.
Connect through the VNC console and check the network config: netplan files on Ubuntu, /etc/network/interfaces on Debian. Your correct IPv4 and IPv6 addresses, gateway and /64 IPv6 block details are in the server details section of the client panel. netplan try reverts automatically if you do not confirm the change, which makes remote network edits safe.
A kernel update, a bad /etc/fstab line or a full disk can stop the boot. Read the boot screen in the VNC console first; the error usually points to the cause. If it stays in the emergency shell or does not boot at all, use rescue mode, fix or comment out the bad fstab line, clear large logs or old backups if the disk is full, or chroot in and set the bootloader back to the previous kernel.
After an unexpected shutdown the file system can be inconsistent. Repairs must run on an unmounted disk, so rescue mode is the safest place:
umount /mnt/root 2>/dev/null
fsck -f /dev/vda1
Reset the root or Administrator password from the client panel first. On Linux, if that fails, reset it manually from rescue mode:
mount /dev/vda1 /mnt/root
for d in dev proc sys; do mount --bind /$d /mnt/root/$d; done
chroot /mnt/root passwd root
exit
If you suspect the password was stolen rather than forgotten, also check for unknown accounts, SSH keys and scheduled tasks.
If the server sends unusual traffic, runs unknown processes or has altered files, boot into rescue mode to stop the attacker, copy your important data and inspect what changed. Rebuilding from a clean backup or a fresh reinstall is usually safer than cleaning a compromised system. Then rotate all passwords and keys and close the hole, using our Linux server security guide.
The most common Windows problem is losing RDP access through a firewall or RDP setting. Log in through the VNC console and fix the rule or setting, reset the Administrator password from the panel if needed, and use Windows recovery options from the console if Windows will not start. See our Windows Server and RDP on a Germany VDS guide for RDP security.
systemctl --failed lists failed units.Contact the 24/7 support team if the server does not start even when powered on from the panel, the console shows no output, no connection works despite correct network settings, or rescue mode will not boot. Include when the problem began, your last change, a screenshot of the console error and the steps you tried; an MTR report from your computer to the server helps with connectivity issues.
Your server is always within reach

Browse the Germany VDS plansWhat is rescue mode?
Rescue mode boots the server into a temporary, Debian-based environment instead of its normal OS. Your main disk is not wiped; from this environment you can mount it, recover files, fix settings and repair the file system.
How is the VNC console different from rescue mode?
The VNC console connects your browser to the running OS's screen and helps when networking is broken. Rescue mode is for when the OS will not boot at all or the disk needs outside repair.
Will rescue mode delete my data?
No. It does not wipe your main disk; it only starts the server in a temporary environment. Still, copy important files before writing to the disk.
A firewall rule locked me out of SSH. What now?
Open the VNC console in the client panel, log in and fix the rule. If the console does not help, boot into rescue mode and edit the firewall configuration on the disk.
I forgot my root password. How do I get in?
Set a new root or Administrator password from the password section of the client panel. If that fails, mount the disk in rescue mode and reset it manually.
How do I leave rescue mode?
When you are done, use the exit option in the rescue section of the client panel. The server reboots into your normal operating system.
