Windows Server and RDP on a Germany VDS: Setup, Performance and Security Steps

An accounting package shared with European partners, a .NET application serving customers in Germany, a remotely accessed ERP or a desktop environment with a European exit: a Germany VDS running Windows Server is the right foundation for all of these. The most common problem with Windows servers, though, is attacks through badly configured RDP. This guide shows how to choose and install Windows Server on a Germany VDS, which settings to apply in the first hour, how to improve performance and how to secure RDP, step by step.

Why a Windows server in Germany?

Placing your Windows server close to its users directly shapes the remote desktop experience. Every click and keystroke in an RDP session travels to the server and comes back as a screen update, so higher latency makes the session feel heavy. If your users are in Central European countries such as Germany, Austria, Switzerland, Poland or Czechia, a Germany VDS gives them a short network path. It also provides a European IP when a German customer needs to allow-list your server.

If your users are in Turkey, the Istanbul-based Windows VDS plans are closer. General criteria for choosing an RDP server are covered in our RDP VDS guide.

Which Windows Server version?

VersionWhen to choose it
Windows Server 2025New projects, the latest security features and the longest support window
Windows Server 2022Broad compatibility with common business software; mature and stable
Windows Server 2019Older business apps not yet tested on newer versions
Windows Server 2016Only when specific legacy software requires it

All four are available in Turkish or English. Check which versions your software vendor supports; English editions are usually more practical for searching error messages and reading documentation. For more on the newest release, see our Windows Server 2025 VDS guide.

Sizing a plan for Windows

Windows Server uses more memory and disk than a Linux server doing the same job, so think one tier higher than you would for Linux. EU-M suits a single-user RDP desktop or a light web app; EU-L suits a few concurrent RDP users, a mid-sized IIS application or a small MSSQL database; EU-XL suits multi-user remote desktops, large MSSQL databases and ERP workloads. Allow disk space for Windows updates and fast-growing database logs. Plans are on the Germany VDS page.

The first hour: essential settings

  1. Install updates: run Windows Update, install all security updates and reboot.
  2. Change the Administrator password: use a unique password of at least sixteen characters stored in a password manager.
  3. Create a personal admin account: use it for daily work and keep Administrator for emergencies.
  4. Set the time zone: match the region you serve so logs are easier to read.
  5. Remove unused roles: fewer roles and features mean a smaller attack surface.
Set-TimeZone -Id "W. Europe Standard Time"
New-LocalUser -Name "admin1" -Password (Read-Host -AsSecureString "Password")
Add-LocalGroupMember -Group "Administrators" -Member "admin1"

RDP security: the most important part

Internet-facing RDP ports are the first target of automated password guessing, often within minutes of a server going online.

1. Restrict RDP by IP

Set-NetFirewallRule -DisplayGroup "Remote Desktop" -RemoteAddress "OFFICE-IP","HOME-IP"

If you have no static IP, reach RDP through a VPN instead of exposing it directly.

2. Network Level Authentication

NLA requires authentication before the login screen opens and stops unauthenticated connections from consuming resources. It is on by default; make sure it stays on.

3. Account lockout policy

Lock accounts temporarily after a set number of failed attempts to slow password guessing; configure it in Local Security Policy.

4. Is changing the port enough?

Moving RDP off the default port cuts scanner noise but is not security on its own. Treat it as an extra layer alongside IP restriction and strong passwords.

5. Watch failed logins

Get-WinEvent -FilterHashtable @{LogName='Security'; Id=4625} -MaxEvents 20 | Format-Table TimeCreated, Message -Wrap

Performance settings

Set visual effects for best performance, disable unused startup apps and let Windows manage virtual memory. With several users, watch per-session memory in Task Manager. On IIS, review application pool recycling and compression; on MSSQL, cap SQL Server's maximum memory so it cannot starve the operating system. If the live CPU, RAM and disk graphs in the client panel stay high, upgrading the plan is the quickest fix.

IIS, SSL and MSSQL for web applications

If you publish a web application on Windows Server, install the IIS role with only the components you need. Open-source tools can install free Let's Encrypt certificates into IIS and renew them automatically; check the scheduled task to confirm renewals happen before expiry. Redirect HTTP to HTTPS and disable old TLS versions for both security and search visibility.

On MSSQL, schedule backups with SQL Server Agent: a full backup daily and transaction log backups hourly or as your data-loss tolerance requires. Do not leave backup files on the same disk as the database; copy them off the server. Never expose port 1433 to the internet: allow only local connections when the app runs on the same server, or only the app server's IP when it runs elsewhere. These two rules stop most attacks aimed at Windows-based web applications.

How the client panel helps on Windows

  • HTML5 VNC console: reach the server screen from your browser even when RDP fails, and fix the setting.
  • Administrator password reset: set a new password without opening a ticket.
  • Power control: reboot or force off an unresponsive server.
  • Reinstall: rebuild with any Windows Server version in minutes.
  • rDNS and IPv6: set PTR records if the server sends email and view your /64 IPv6 block.
Reinstalling erases all data on the disk. Use it only with a current backup and when truly needed.

User management and sessions

If several people use the server, give each one a personal account and never share accounts. Security logs then show who did what, and access for a leaver ends by closing one account. Set idle RDP sessions to log off automatically to free memory and avoid forgotten open sessions. Grant administrator rights only to those who truly need them; standard accounts are usually enough for accounting or ERP users.

Backups and licensing

Ransomware risk is especially high on Windows, so combine the Backup Service, which keeps full-image backups on separate storage, with regular copies of important folders and database backups to a location the server cannot reach, and test restores monthly. Windows Server licensing is included with the server, but multiple simultaneous remote desktop users may need Remote Desktop Services client access licences, and Office or other desktop software may have separate server terms. Check licence conditions before you deploy.

Frequently Asked Questions

Which Windows Server versions can I install on a Germany VDS?

At checkout you can choose Windows Server 2016, 2019, 2022 or 2025 in Turkish or English. Current versions are recommended for new projects.

Which Germany VDS plan suits Windows Server?

Windows Server uses more memory than Linux. EU-M suits light use, while EU-L or EU-XL suit several users or heavy applications such as MSSQL.

How do I secure RDP?

Open RDP in the firewall only to your own IP addresses, keep Network Level Authentication on, use strong passwords with an account lockout policy and install updates regularly.

What if I cannot reach RDP?

Use the HTML5 VNC console in the client panel to reach the server screen from your browser and fix the firewall or network setting. If you forgot the password, reset the Administrator password from the panel.

Can I reinstall Windows Server from scratch?

Yes. Pick a Windows Server or Linux template in the reinstall section of the client panel and rebuild the server in minutes; this erases the disk.

How do I back up Windows Server?

Choose the Backup Service at checkout for monthly, weekly or daily full-image backups. We also recommend regularly copying important folders and databases off the server.
