You have decided you need a server in Europe; the next question is which country. Germany VDS or France VDS? Both sit close to Europe's strong internet infrastructure, and both come with KVM virtualization, NVMe storage, a gigabit port, network-level DDoS protection and the same client panel. The plan tiers match too: four plans from EU-S to EU-XL in Germany and from FR-S to FR-XL in France. So where is the difference? This guide splits the choice into eight concrete criteria and shows which location wins in which situation, so you can build a scorecard for your own project.
This common ground makes it easy to use both locations together. For details, see our Germany VDS selection guide and France VDS hosting guide.
France VDS servers are in Gravelines, northern France, close to Western European hubs such as Paris, Brussels, Amsterdam and London. Germany sits in the middle of the continent and is a natural hub for Central, Northern and Eastern Europe.
| Most of your users are in | Location that stands out |
|---|---|
| France, Belgium, the Netherlands, Luxembourg | France |
| UK, Ireland, Spain, Portugal | France |
| Germany, Austria, Switzerland | Germany |
| Poland, Czechia, Slovakia, Hungary | Germany |
| Denmark, Sweden, Norway, Finland, the Baltics | Germany |
| Italy, the Balkans | Measure; both can be close |
Use real measurements rather than maps. Ping and MTR from your users' cities to a test IP in each location, and look at jitter and loss as well as the average. A few milliseconds rarely matter for websites, but for games, voice or live data, pick the lower-latency location. Our European latency guide explains how.
Your server also talks to payment providers, shipping companies, marketplaces and business systems, and an order flow can involve dozens of API calls. List where your critical services run: heavy integration with German services favours Germany, while services in France or Western Europe favour France.
A store or SaaS focused on the German-speaking DACH market fits Germany naturally, while projects aimed at French-speaking markets fit France. Search engines weigh content language, domain and hreflang tags far more than server location, but a nearby server improves page speed, which helps indirectly.
Two strong locations for Europe
Germany and France VDS: the same plans, the same panel, different geography.
Explore the Germany VDS plansFor small and mid-sized projects, a cold standby offers the best balance of cost and resilience.
Germany and France are both EU members and GDPR applies directly in each, so data about people in Europe stays inside the European Economic Area either way. If a contract or regulator requires a specific country, that requirement decides. See our GDPR and European data hosting guide for technical measures.
If your European server also talks to an office or system in Turkey, latency to Turkey matters. Geographically Germany is slightly closer than France, but the real figure depends on routing and should be measured. If most of your users are in Turkey, the Turkey-location VDS in Istanbul is the right choice, as discussed in our France VDS or Turkey VDS guide.
| Scenario | Recommendation |
|---|---|
| E-commerce selling into the DACH region | Germany |
| French-language content or customers based in France | France |
| SaaS serving the UK and Ireland | France |
| Gaming community in Central and Eastern Europe | Germany |
| VPN or monitoring node with a European exit | Depends on the target region; a node in each location also works |
| Your own mail server | Where most correspondence goes; rDNS and IPv6 are managed in the panel in both |
| Second location for disaster recovery | Whichever is not your primary |
For mail servers see our VDS mail server guide, and for Windows workloads our Windows Server and RDP on a Germany VDS guide.
Give each criterion an importance score from 1 to 3 for your project and rate each location from 0 to 2 on it. The location with the higher weighted total is your answer. In most projects the first two criteria, user geography and measured latency, decide most of it; the rest tip the balance when the two locations come out close. If the scores are nearly equal, either choice is right, and you can always add the second location later for backup or regional growth.
For example, a SaaS team selling accounting software to firms in Poland, Czechia and Austria weights user geography at 3, where Germany scores 2 and France 1; measured latency at 3, with Germany slightly ahead; partners at 2, since their payment providers run in Germany; and data protection at 2, where both tie. Germany wins clearly, so the primary goes to Germany and a cold standby to France. A content platform serving London, Dublin and Paris gets the opposite result, with the primary in France and the standby in Germany.
Starting with one location and adding the second later is the most common growth path. Open a VDS in the new location with the same OS template, apply your configuration from a script or Compose file rather than by hand so the servers do not drift apart, set up regular backups or database replication and check weekly that the second server is current. Finally, rehearse switching DNS to it at least once; an untested failover plan rarely works as expected during a real outage.

Germany VDS for Central Europe, France VDS for Western Europe.
Explore the France VDS plansIs there a technical difference between a Germany VDS and a France VDS?
Plan structure, KVM virtualization, NVMe storage, a gigabit port and client panel features are the same in both locations. The difference is geography and how far it is from your users.
My users are spread across Europe. Which should I choose?
Check which region sends the most traffic. Central and Eastern Europe usually favours Germany; Western Europe and the UK usually favour France. A CDN narrows the gap for static content either way.
Does it make sense to use both locations?
Yes. Running the primary server where most users are and a standby or read replica in the other location is strong for both performance and disaster recovery.
Are Germany and France VDS prices different?
Both locations offer the same resource tiers, priced in US dollars. Check the category pages for current pricing.
Where is the France VDS hosted?
France VDS servers are hosted in Gravelines, northern France.
Can I change the location later?
A VDS cannot be moved; you open a new VDS in the other location and migrate your data. The same panel and OS templates make migration straightforward.
