DDoS Attacks in 2025: The Realities of Business Server Security

Last month an e-commerce customer preparing for a New Year campaign called at 09:00. "The site won't open — what happened?" We looked at the systems straight away: 1.8 million requests per second. A classic Layer 7 DDoS attack. The customer was about to panic, but our systems were already engaged. 14 minutes later everything was back to normal. The customer asked: "Is it that easy?" No, it is not easy. It only looks easy when the right infrastructure is in place.

The DDoS Reality: The Numbers Speak

According to the 2024 reports from Cloudflare and Akamai, in the last year alone DDoS attacks reached the following scale:

+71%
Increase in Attacks (2024 vs 2023)
$180K
Average Damage (Hourly)
4.2 hours
Average Attack Duration

But the statistics do not tell the real story. The real issue is what 4 hours of downtime means for an e-commerce site:

  • Direct revenue loss ($120,000 - $300,000 on average)
  • Loss of customer trust (unmeasurable)
  • A drop in SEO rankings (a 3-6 month effect)
  • Negative perception on social media

In 2023 one of our game server customers was targeted by a rival community. After a 6-hour attack, 340 players moved to other servers. Technically we stopped the attack, but we could not stop the social damage.

A Real Example: In 2024 a customer came to us from another company. Their previous provider offered "unlimited DDoS protection". But at the first 50 Gbps attack the server was null-routed (in other words, shut off completely). The customer was offline for 18 hours.

Why Is Not All DDoS Protection the Same?

In the hosting market everyone says "we have DDoS protection". In reality there are three kinds of protection:

1. Marketing Protection (Most Companies)

The website says "DDoS protection", but:

  • No BGP network → no upstream filtering possible
  • No scrubbing center → traffic cannot be cleaned
  • Best effort → a "we will do what we can" approach

2. Cloud-Based Protection (Cloudflare, Akamai, etc.)

Powerful and effective, but:

  • High cost (enterprise plans $5000+/mo)
  • Higher latency (traffic goes through the US/Europe)
  • Cannot be used for gaming servers (the TCP/UDP proxy problem)

3. Infrastructure-Based Protection (The SistemDC Model)

You have your own BGP network:

  • Filtering at the upstream ISP level
  • Scrubbing in Turkey → low latency
  • Suitable for gaming, e-commerce and every scenario

SistemDC's 3-Layer Defence System

We have been in the data center business for 17 years. We have seen hundreds of attacks. Our system works in three layers:

Layer 1: ISP Level (Blackhole Routing)

We operate our BGP network under AS211804. Thanks to our direct connections with Turk Telekom, Vodafone and TTNet:

  • When abnormal traffic is detected, we signal the upstream ISP within 8-12 seconds
  • Attack traffic is blackholed before it reaches the data center
  • Zero bandwidth cost

Layer 2: The Data Center Perimeter

Arbor Networks DDoS detection on our edge routers:

  • A guarantee of 500 Mbit/s of clean traffic (included in every plan)
  • SYN floods, UDP amplification and DNS reflection are cleaned automatically
  • Real-time dashboard → monitored 24/7 by the NOC team

Layer 3: Server Level

Customised security on every server:

  • iptables rate limiting (according to the customer profile)
  • Fail2Ban integration
  • Application-level filtering (for HTTP floods)

72 Hours of Resistance: A Real Case Study

In November 2024 one of our telecommunications customers (name withheld) was targeted. A rival company tried to bring down the customer's critical services.

Day 1 (Friday 14:30): A 340 Gbps volumetric attack began. Upstream blackhole routing kicked in. The customer's services were not affected. The NOC team began monitoring.

Day 2 (Saturday 03:15): The attacker changed tactics: Slowloris + DNS amplification combined. Our edge routers cleaned it automatically. Latency rose from 12ms to 18ms (acceptable).

Day 3 (Sunday 11:00): Smart bots came into play (Layer 7). We brought in Cloudflare (with the customer's approval). WAF rules were written and deployed in 40 minutes. The attack ended at 18:30.

Conclusion: The customer was never offline. Total cost (to the customer): $0. Our cost: ~$2,800 (bandwidth + engineering time). The cost of losing a customer: incalculable.

What Does the 500 Mbit Clean Traffic Guarantee Mean?

The market is full of promises of "unlimited" DDoS protection. But the truth is this:

"Unlimited" protection can drop to 0 Mbit under attack. Our 500 Mbit guarantee means this: even in the worst-case scenario, 500 Mbit/s of legitimate user traffic will reach your server.

Who is 500 Mbit enough for?

  • E-commerce sites: 10,000+ concurrent users
  • Gaming servers: 500-1000 players
  • SaaS applications: More than enough for typical use
  • Corporate mail/file server: Covers office needs

Need more? We have 1 Gbit, 5 Gbit and 10 Gbit plans.

How to Choose the Right Data Center

Ask 5 critical questions when choosing DDoS protection:

  1. Do you have a BGP AS number? (Ours: AS211804) → Without one, upstream filtering is impossible
  2. How many ISPs are you connected to? (We have 3: TT, Vodafone, TTNet) → A single ISP = a single point of failure
  3. What is your Tier level? (Ours is built to Tier 3 standards) → In Tier 1-2, a power problem = disaster
  4. Do you have a scrubbing center? → Without one, traffic cannot be cleaned
  5. Do you have a 24/7 NOC? → Who responds if there is an attack at 3 a.m.?

What Should You Do Now?

If you do not currently have adequate DDoS protection:

This Week:

  • Ask your current hosting company: "Do you have BGP-based DDoS filtering?"
  • If the answer is vague or "no", look for alternatives
  • Temporarily enable the Cloudflare free tier for critical services

This Month:

  • Review your server firewall rules
  • Set up a monitoring system (at least an uptime check)
  • Draw up a disaster recovery plan

Within 3 Months:

  • Plan a migration to a Tier 3 data center
  • Build a redundant hosting strategy
  • Prepare your team for DDoS scenarios
