Why aren't my server disk's power-on hours zero?

Why aren't my server disk's power-on hours zero?

Short answer: Alongside new hardware, our data center also uses tested, health-verified refurbished hardware. A disk's power-on hours alone are not a health indicator.

What actually matters

  • Sector errors: reallocated, pending and uncorrectable sector counts. On a healthy disk these are 0.
  • Remaining life: the manufacturer's wear indicator (e.g. Percentage Used).
  • Error logs and self-test results.

Every disk we deliver passes a SMART test on these values. Disks with sector errors or less than 70% remaining life are never delivered.

How can you check it yourself?

On Linux: smartctl -a /dev/sda (for NVMe: smartctl -a /dev/nvme0); on Windows, a tool such as CrystalDiskInfo.

What if it fails?

If a fault is found on SistemDC-owned hardware, the part is replaced free of charge with an equivalent or better one. In RAID 1 setups a single disk failure causes no data loss. Still, RAID is not a backup; back up your data regularly.
