How do I install the NVIDIA driver on a GPU server?

Short answer: On GPU dedicated servers you install the NVIDIA driver inside the OS. After install, verify with nvidia-smi.

Steps

  1. Connect over SSH or console; confirm the GPU appears on PCI (`lspci | grep -i nvidia`).
  2. Install the official NVIDIA driver / CUDA package for your Linux distribution (nouveau may need blacklisting).
  3. Reboot and check `nvidia-smi`.
  4. On Windows GPU servers, install the NVIDIA driver via Device Manager / NVIDIA installer.
